Workmen's Compensation Act 1923; Question whether the provisions of the Act would apply to apprentices hired on the old pay rates or those hired on the pay scales outlined in the Apprentices Act. The apprentice who perished in an accident on June 26, 1964, was presumably a trainee in a designated trade, but according to the definition of apprentice, he also had to have received training in accordance with an apprenticeship contract, as stated in Section 4 of the Apprentices Act, 1961. He would not be eligible to receive the benefits of section 16 of the Act if the Apprenticeship was not conducted under an apprenticeship contract that was registered with the Apprenticeship Adviser
